City and River 1820 -1840

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. This gallery covers the period 1800 1840. This relatively short period of time was a watershed for the docks, and London as a whole. The West India docks were established to accommodate trade from the West Indies. This was built on the back of thousands of slaves forcefully, and horrifically, transferred from Africa to the Caribbean. The slave trade was abolished in Britain in 1807. It was abolished in all British colonies in 1834.

The artist focuses on a key moment in the history of the Whitechapel Gallery: the presentation of Picassos Guernica in 1939. Organised in collaboration with the Stepney Trade Union Council in east London to raise awareness of the Spanish Civil War, the suggested price of entry was a pair of boots, left underneath the work, to be sent to the Republicans in Spain. Forming the centrepiece of Macugas installation is a life-size tapestry of Guernica.

Arcadia

Dates: 27.5.2009 to 12.9.2009. Arcadia, Tom Stoppard's 'richest, most ravishing comedy' (NY Times), is a dazzling, witty masterpiece of misunderstanding and quest for knowledge, resonating across centuries. David Leveaux, one of the country's leading directors, whose other recent West End and Broadway work with Tom Stoppard includes The Real Thing and Jumpers, will direct the first major revival of this brilliant play since its premiere at the National Theatre in 1993. April 1809, a stately home in Derbyshire. Thomasina, a gifted pupil, proposes a startling theory, beyond her comprehension. All around her, the adults, including her tutor Septimus, are preoccupied with secret desires, illicit passions and professional rivalries. Two hundred years later, academic adversaries Hannah and Bernard, are piecing together puzzling clues, curiously recalling those events of 1809, in their quest for an increasingly elusive truth. Arcadia features an outstanding company of actors, including Neil Pearson, Dan Stevens, Nancy Carroll, Jessie Cave and Ed Stoppard.

Drawing on public and private collections nationally and internationally, the exhibition charts the early development of Auerbach's remarkable approach to painting, for which he is celebrated as one of Britain's greatest living artists.

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. The Bantam class of tug was produced in the late 1940's and the 1950's and 1960's by E.C. Jones and Sons of Brentford. A New World: A Life of Thomas Paine

Dates: 29.8.2009 to 9.10.2009. Trevor Griffiths fills this moving story of the life and loves of the author of 'The Rights of Man' with songs, music and the huge carnival spirit of a world turned upside down. It is the late-18th century and on both sides of the Atlantic the world seems filled with exciting new possibilities for humanity: old yokes can at last be cast off, ancient hierarchies dissolved. Chief among those lighting the fire is the English radical Thomas Paine, a man of great compassion, brutal honesty and a political writer of genius. Whether answering the call of an America chafing under the tyranny of the British crown, riding the storm of revolutionary France, or challenging a conservative backlash in Britain, Paine is at the heart of things, ardent in his search for love, passionate in his pursuit of liberty.

Daisy Pulls it Off

Dates: 4.8.2009 to 8.8.2009. Daisy Pulls It Off, first performed in 1983, is an affectionate pastiche of the classic girls' school story, crammed full of slang like 'topping', 'jolly' and 'scrummy'. The play captures the innocence and uncomplicated essence of Angela Brazil's schoolgirl novels from the 1920s which dealt with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls: their charms, misfortunes and personal failures. Set in a prestigious all girls boarding school in a bygone era, the play follows our plucky heroine, Daisy Meredith, an elementary school girl and first scholarship student to attend Grangewood School. The privileged students are determined to make Daisy look bad in the eyes of the administration, which has its own problems. Can Daisy shake off the stigma of her poor school background and overcome the snobbish prejudice from her well-to-do schoolgirl rivals? Can she save the school from financial ruin before it's too late? Who is that mysterious whistling gardener? And more importantly will there be enough jam for tea.

The Conversation Piece: Scenes of Fashionable Life

Dates: 30.10.2009 to 14.2.2010. This exhibition will explore the tradition of the 'Conversation Piece', group portraits of high-society sitters in strikingly informal situations. With its roots in 17th-century Dutch painting, the genre is best known through the work of the English artists, William Hogarth and George Stubbs in the 18th century and Sir Edwin Landseer in the 19th century. The greatest exponent of the Conversation Piece was Johan Zoffany; the exhibition will include a remarkable series of works produced by the artist for his royal patron George III. The Conversation Piece depicts sitters going about their daily lives and thus provides a fascinating insight into the fashions, interiors and manners of the age.

Designer Style: Home Decorating in the 1950s

Dates: 11.11.2008 to 6.9.2009. In the years after the Second World War, Britain experienced a new sense of optimism about the future. Following the Festival of Britain, there was an emphasis on good design for all aspects of home furnishing. Manufacturers increasingly employed artists to design textiles and wallpapers, and used their names as a selling point. Consumers welcomed the new brighter colours and fresh approach to pattern, seeing it as a newly optimistic approach to home decorating. This exhibition draws on MoDAs own collections to show a wide range of wallpapers and textiles, many of which were designed by well-known artists and designers of the period, including Lucienne Day, Graham Sutherland, Cawthra Mulock and Jacqueline Groag. These designers exploited the potential of new screen printing techniques to create wallpapers and textiles which were more fluid, abstract and painterly than had been possible before.

City and River 1820 -1840

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. This gallery covers the period 1800 1840. This relatively short period of time was a watershed for the docks, and London as a whole. It was characterised by powerful economic, technological and social change. The wide variety of displays in the gallery bares testament to this. The West India docks were established to accommodate trade from the West Indies. This was built on the back of thousands of slaves forcefully, and horrifically, transferred from Africa to the Caribbean. The slave trade was abolished in Britain in 1807. It was abolished in all British colonies in 1834.

Exploring Interiors: Decoration of the Home 1900-1960

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. Exploring Interiors asks what our living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens were like in the first half of the twentieth century, and why. The displays show fabrics and wallpapers, from expensive designs in the most up-to-date styles to cheaper, popular patterns for the mass market. They offer a taste of the sort of choices that were available at the time. Catalogues give a glimpse of the fixtures and fittings, the furniture and furnishings that could be bought in the shops. Advertisements and magazines highlight the newest household equipment and reveal changing attitudes to the home and domestic life. But, at the same time, Exploring Interiors uses the evocative evidence of photographs and personal commentary to find out what people's homes were really like. And, more often than not, they were very different from the impression given by advertisements, catalogues and magazines.

Troilus and Cressida

Dates: 12.7.2009 to 20.9.2009. Shakespeare fills his ancient tale with savage comedy, great passion, vivid characters and all the heat and sweat of a long and painful campaign. He seems never more modern than in dealing with the subject of a tragic love pursued in the midst of a pointless war. Seven years have passed since the Greeks first began their siege of Troy, and on the Trojan side of the walls the beautiful Cressida, aided and abetted by her intriguing uncle Pandarus, has embarked upon a passionate love affair with Prince Troilus. When Cressida is forced to join her treacherous father in the Greek camp, can their love survive a difficult separation or will it join the other casualties of war?
