Business History Objects

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. All of the collections reflect the development of the postal service but this section tells you about those which also illustrate the history of the Post Office and Royal Mail as a business. Our collection illustrates the changing face of Royal Mail from its conception in 1635 until the present day. In 1635 King Charles I as King of England opened up his private mail carrying service for use by the public. It became known as The Royal Mail. That service developed over the 370 years since then into the company we know today. In that time, despite many changes, Royal Mail has always maintained a public presence that is instantly recognisable, most particularly with the GPO, The Post Office and Royal Mail.

Nevertheless, our heroine, whether wisely or no, refuses to give him up. War is no strife. To the dark house and the detested wife. Set against a background of sexism, snobbery and a battle between the generations, Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well turns fairytale logic on its head. A wondrous, bittersweet story. Freeze Frame

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. To coincide with International Polar Year, the National Maritime Museum displays some of the earliest photographs of the Arctic, its landscape and people, in a new temporary exhibition in the Queen's House. Freeze Frame will showcase a selection of prints taken from the Museum's world-class historic photographs collection. The exhibition will look at two expeditions to the Arctic under Captain Edward Inglefield in 1854, and Captain George Nares in 1875-76. Both expeditions used photographic processes that were in their infancy, having been announced to the public only a few years before. Both processes involved a significant amount of bulky equipment and chemicals in order to develop the negatives. However, the technique used by Nares had a shorter exposure time allowing more photographs of the expedition activities to be recorded.

Royal Ballet: Jewels

Dates: 9.6.2009 to 19.6.2009. Created for New York City Ballet in 1967, Jewels is, in effect, three separate and complete abstract ballets with a nominal link: each is colour-themed to a gemstone, and explores a choreographic style that reflects Balanchine's dance influences and history. The romantic French manner of 'Emeralds' - second nature to the Company's dancers from long acquaintance with Giselle - begins the sequence with music by Faur, as drifting sylphs and their cavaliers inhabit a courtly and melancholy dream-world. 'Rubies', in startling contrast, brings a blast of mid-20th-century pizzazz, set to jazzinflected Stravinsky.

Dates: 21.4.2009 to 26.6.2009. A strange mix of stuffed animal hides and photographs create an unsettling atmosphere in thinking around metaphors in nature by Corinne Rusch. In this new installation at the Austrian Cultural Forum London, Rusch ironically explores the obvious but often understated parallels between the human will to preserve our beauty and youth, and the ubiquitous taxidermy process, artificially preserving wild and domestic animals for our human sense of ownership. The dense medium-format photographs, which hang disturbingly between a series of stuffed animal asses, show us scenes from what appears to be the back room of a taxidermists studio.

Between generous helpings from Max's side-splitting repertoire, Dave Sealey the life long music hall performer, reveals the quiet unassuming man beneath the make-up and gaudy apparel. With songs and laughs a-plenty, this show is as saucy as a seaside postcard from Brighton pier itself.
