Benjamin West: Death on the Pale Horse and Other Works

Dates: 27.2.2009 to 24.5.2009. Benjamin West's first version of Death on the Pale Horse is the focus of this display. Drawn in 1783, his striking portrayal of the Apocalypse was part of a commission from George III but the King eventually rejected it as a 'Bedlamite scene'. West nevertheless pursued the composition independently, reworking his original study to produce a final, monumental painting in 1817. West was born in Pennsylvania, USA, in 1738, but achieved his greatest success in Britain. Moving to London in 1763, he rapidly established himself as one of the country's leading artists. His status was confirmed when he became a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768 and he was shortly afterwards appointed History Painter to the King. In 1792 he succeeded Sir Joshua Reynolds as the Academy's second President. Death on the Pale Horse features alongside a small group of watercolours, drawings and sketchbooks from the Royal Academy Collection to explore West's skills as a draughtsman and the fascination with apocalyptic imagery that emerged during a turbulent era of wars and revolutions.

She depicts the powerful contrasts of the landscape the soaring cliffs and vast white beaches interrupted by huge granite outposts which are awe-inspiring, yet also quietly contemplative. The weather too provides her with dramatic contrasts, changes in light and shadow transform the coastline from a feeling of sombre melancholy to bright, brilliant sunshine in moments.

Royal Ballet: Jewels

Dates: 9.6.2009 to 19.6.2009. Created for New York City Ballet in 1967, Jewels is, in effect, three separate and complete abstract ballets with a nominal link: each is colour-themed to a gemstone, and explores a choreographic style that reflects Balanchine's dance influences and history. The romantic French manner of 'Emeralds' - second nature to the Company's dancers from long acquaintance with Giselle - begins the sequence with music by Faur, as drifting sylphs and their cavaliers inhabit a courtly and melancholy dream-world. 'Rubies', in startling contrast, brings a blast of mid-20th-century pizzazz, set to jazzinflected Stravinsky.

Design for the Real World - How Ergonomics Makes Things Better

Dates: 4.11.2009 to 7.3.2010. Ergonomics has been described as the science of everyday life. It uses the knowledge of human performance in conjunction with design and engineering in order to create systems, products and processes which are safe, efficient and enjoyable to use. The exhibition will show the impact of designers and manufacturers who have not accurately considered our ergonomic requirements - how the same design 'errors' that lead to you mistaking the hot tap for the cold one are the same, in principle, to those that can lead to an air traffic disaster or power station meltdown.

Dates: 15.5.2009 to 23.5.2009. The Chldren's Hour by Lillian Hellman and directed by Jane Buckland. The story of how one malicious piece of invented gossip can destroy reputations and lead to tragedy is beautifully portrayed in this play which examines faith in truth. Why do people always believe the worst of others? I know Jane (who brought us On the Razzle and See How They Run) is really looking forward to this departure from her usual farce genre, and it will be a definite 'must see' in the Season.

Daisy Pulls it Off

Dates: 4.8.2009 to 8.8.2009. Daisy Pulls It Off, first performed in 1983, is an affectionate pastiche of the classic girls' school story, crammed full of slang like 'topping', 'jolly' and 'scrummy'. The play captures the innocence and uncomplicated essence of Angela Brazil's schoolgirl novels from the 1920s which dealt with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls: their charms, misfortunes and personal failures. Set in a prestigious all girls boarding school in a bygone era, the play follows our plucky heroine, Daisy Meredith, an elementary school girl and first scholarship student to attend Grangewood School. The privileged students are determined to make Daisy look bad in the eyes of the administration, which has its own problems. Can Daisy shake off the stigma of her poor school background and overcome the snobbish prejudice from her well-to-do schoolgirl rivals? Can she save the school from financial ruin before it's too late? Who is that mysterious whistling gardener? And more importantly will there be enough jam for tea.

Ben Long: Crown Jewels

Dates: 3.5.2009 to 13.6.2009. Although a substantial number of K6s and bandstands have been granted listed status, ensuring their survival as part of the nation's heritage, the remaining architectural shells fulfil their intended purpose to a lesser degree with each passing year. In the early twentieth century, brass bands were a vibrant tradition, founded upon localindustry and closely woven into the fabric of community - an outward expression of civic duty. Bandstands were designed to give shelter, optimise acoustic properties, enable panoramic visibility during performances and provide the ornamental focal points of public parks and promenades. More recently, popular entertainment has evolved to cater to global tastes, and the gradual demise of community interaction has left the common bandstand with little discernible use, other than as a decorative folly.

Arcadia

Dates: 27.5.2009 to 12.9.2009. Arcadia, Tom Stoppard's 'richest, most ravishing comedy' (NY Times), is a dazzling, witty masterpiece of misunderstanding and quest for knowledge, resonating across centuries. David Leveaux, one of the country's leading directors, whose other recent West End and Broadway work with Tom Stoppard includes The Real Thing and Jumpers, will direct the first major revival of this brilliant play since its premiere at the National Theatre in 1993. April 1809, a stately home in Derbyshire. Thomasina, a gifted pupil, proposes a startling theory, beyond her comprehension. All around her, the adults, including her tutor Septimus, are preoccupied with secret desires, illicit passions and professional rivalries. Two hundred years later, academic adversaries Hannah and Bernard, are piecing together puzzling clues, curiously recalling those events of 1809, in their quest for an increasingly elusive truth. Arcadia features an outstanding company of actors, including Neil Pearson, Dan Stevens, Nancy Carroll, Jessie Cave and Ed Stoppard.

Bully Beef and Bullseyes: The Second World War in Runnymede

Dates: 18.12.2008 to 31.5.2009. Chertsey Museum's Discovery Zone has been transported back to the 1940s for the Museums's latest display, Bully Beef & Bullseyes. The display looks at life on the home front in Runnymede during the Second World War. The centre piece of the exhibition is a reproduction of a Morrison air-raid shelter on which is the weekly food ration. Other displays focus on evacuees, the Make Do and Mend campaign, role of the Home Guard and the local war effort, with a number of interactive exhibits. The world's only factory manufacturing darts for the troops at this time was based in Addlestone, which explains the reference to bullseyes in the title.

The Royal Ballet: Giselle

Dates: 6.4.2009 to 26.5.2009. Giselle is one of the most influential of all Romantic ballets, and one of the greatest and most popular works of the dance canon and of The Royal Ballet 's repertory. The title role presents the transcendental power of a woman's love in the face of betrayal and is one of the most technically demanding and emotionally challenging roles in classical dance not surprisingly, it is here a great showcase for the leading ballerinas of the Company. Peter Wright 's sensitive staging in the atmospheric designs by John Macfarlane heightens the contrast as the story moves between the human and supernatural worlds. The peasant girl Giselle is driven to kill herself when she discovers that her youthful lover 'Loys' is in reality Count Albrecht, and not free to marry her. She rises from the dead to prey on the man who has betrayed her. But as Albrecht, repenting, visits her moonlit grave, Giselle protects him from the deathly touch of her phantom sisters until the dawn sees him safe once more. The passion and drama of the tale combined with the beauty of its choreography have made Giselle as instantly appealing for newcomers to ballet as it is to those already under its spell.

Living With Collectible Design

Dates: 1.2.2009 to 30.5.2009. The Rabih Hage Gallery has initiated a series of displays that explore the notion of living with collectible design. In stark contrast to the current trend of displaying collectible design in a 'white cube' perched high on a pedestal, elevating objects beyond their recognised domain, 'Living with collectible Design' will present real life scenarios featuring collectible objects as part of our day-to-day living. Sourced from the Rabih Hage Collection, the displays will form a long-term and ever-changing exhibition covering the four principle functions of a living space: living, eating, sleeping, and working. The new programme will begin with living and eating. On show will be recent additions to the Rabih Hage Gallery collection: glass flowers by Nathalie Pasqua, ceramics by Carol McNicoll and 'identity disorder' a one-off light by Arik Levy. Alongside these new works the exhibition will present one-offs and limited edition designs by Karen Ryan, Piet Hein Eek, Johnny Swing, Paul Cocksedge and Aki Kuroda, dispersed in amongst furniture by Rabih Hage.

New Adventures: Matthew Bourne's Dorian Gray

Dates: 6.10.2009 to 10.10.2009. Matthew Bourne's Dorian Gray freely adapted from Oscar Wilde's masterpiece. This gothic fable becomes a darkly seductive dance theatre event from master storyteller, Matthew Bourne. Set in the image obsessed world of contemporary art and politics, this 'black fairy tale' tells the story of an exceptionally alluring young man who makes a pact with the devil. Amongst London's beautiful people, Dorian Gray is the 'it boy', an icon of beauty and truth in an increasingly ugly world. The destructive power of beauty, the blind pursuit of pleasure and the darkness and corruption that lie beneath a charming facade; the themes behind Oscar Wilde's cautionary tale have never been more timely.

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. The exhibition will look at two expeditions to the Arctic under Captain Edward Inglefield in 1854, and Captain George Nares in 1875-76. Both expeditions used photographic processes that were in their infancy, having been announced to the public only a few years before. Both processes involved a significant amount of bulky equipment and chemicals in order to develop the negatives. However, the technique used by Nares had a shorter exposure time allowing more photographs of the expedition activities to be recorded.

Ian Pedigo

Dates: 12.5.2009 to 13.6.2009. Rokeby is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by American sculptor Ian Pedigo in the UK. Pedigo composes objects and collages from seemingly abandoned materials; scraps of wood, ends of material, electrical tape, plastic cups, Plexiglas, magazine pages. However regardless of how throwaway the materials appear the artist's arrangements retain a potent visual coherence whilst the ephemeral is eloquently articulated through the components.

I have it on good authority that you will see Peter and Wendy fly and as demand is bound to be high we will be running this production for two weeks instead of our usual one and, cast permitting, I am hoping we will be having three matinee performances on the Saturdays. This exciting Christmas show will be jointly directed by myself and Warren Taylor.
