Group Show: Everything has a Name, or the Potential to be Named

Dates: 1.5.2009 to 20.6.2009. Vasco Araujo, Alberto Baraya, Matthew Buckingham, Luis Camnitzer, Antonio Caro, Andrea Geyer, Miler Lagos, Gabriel Sierra, and others tbc. Everything has a name, or the potential to be named* is a group exhibition that focuses on how European colonial powers during the 17th and 18th Centuries appropriated the natural environment in the Americas. The exhibition features works which address how organisms, land and people have been respectively classified, renamed and dislocated by generations of explorers and colonisers, as a consequence of economically and scientifically motivated expeditions by European empires to the Americas. These forms of cultural domination from the re-naming of a region, to the classification of a medicinal plant have left lasting legacies, which remain in common use today. In reconsidering this history, many of the artists in the exhibition critically re-appropriate such colonial interpretative systems. By examining the relationship between land, language, botany and colonialism, they reveal the imperialist quest to produce a universal index with which to perceive and tame the other and 'unknown'. They do so through research, documentary, film and mapping practices; via text and outdoor interventions; and by using tactics, which are often humorous, to evade or overcome determinism. As part of the exhibition, academics from various fields will give lectures contextualizing the works. Literature produced between the 17th and 20th Centuries by writers, geographers, scientists and economists, once back from their expeditions, will be displayed in Gasworks' reading area. The public programme will enlarge the geo-historical parameters of the exhibition by addressing present-day issues of land ownership and contemporary cases of exploitation of natural resources which have resulted in the reconfiguration of a geography, a culture, a population or an ecosystem in and beyond the Americas.

In 1635 King Charles I as King of England opened up his private mail carrying service for use by the public. It became known as The Royal Mail. That service developed over the 370 years since then into the company we know today. In that time, despite many changes, Royal Mail has always maintained a public presence that is instantly recognisable, most particularly with the GPO, The Post Office and Royal Mail.

The Pillowman

Dates: 22.9.2009 to 26.9.2009. Once upon a time there was a show so revolting and yet so human and so funny that a portion of the audience felt compelled to leave at intermission while the rest stayed totally rapt in the events and tales illustrated before them. Martin McDonagh's searing play tells the story of Katurian, a writer in a totalitarian state who is being interrogated over a spate of child murders which appear to have striking similarities to some of his gruesome short stories. With Katurian's brother imprisoned in the next cell, his interrogators will stop at nothing to get the answers they want. Moving between the forbidding interrogation cell and the Grimm-like world of Katurian's grisly stories, this blackest of black comedies explores family secrets, murder, repression and the ultimate power of storytelling. At once viciously funny and deeply disturbing, The Pillowman mixes fairytale allegory and brutal realism to create a dark, haunting tale that is not for the faint-hearted or the easily offended. The original Royal National Theatre production received the 2004 Olivier Award and an Evening Standard Award nomination for Best New Play. I was captured by this play the very first time I read it, and am really excited to be bringing it to Prompt Corner, which will provide a perfect, intimate setting for this intense piece. Originally part of the 2008 season, due to rights issues I have had an extra year to develop my ideas and am now raring to make this a very special production.

Organised in collaboration with the Stepney Trade Union Council in east London to raise awareness of the Spanish Civil War, the suggested price of entry was a pair of boots, left underneath the work, to be sent to the Republicans in Spain. A New World: A Life of Thomas Paine

Dates: 29.8.2009 to 9.10.2009. Trevor Griffiths fills this moving story of the life and loves of the author of 'The Rights of Man' with songs, music and the huge carnival spirit of a world turned upside down. It is the late-18th century and on both sides of the Atlantic the world seems filled with exciting new possibilities for humanity: old yokes can at last be cast off, ancient hierarchies dissolved. Chief among those lighting the fire is the English radical Thomas Paine, a man of great compassion, brutal honesty and a political writer of genius. Whether answering the call of an America chafing under the tyranny of the British crown, riding the storm of revolutionary France, or challenging a conservative backlash in Britain, Paine is at the heart of things, ardent in his search for love, passionate in his pursuit of liberty.

Royal Ballet: Jewels

Dates: 9.6.2009 to 19.6.2009. Created for New York City Ballet in 1967, Jewels is, in effect, three separate and complete abstract ballets with a nominal link: each is colour-themed to a gemstone, and explores a choreographic style that reflects Balanchine's dance influences and history. The romantic French manner of 'Emeralds' - second nature to the Company's dancers from long acquaintance with Giselle - begins the sequence with music by Faur, as drifting sylphs and their cavaliers inhabit a courtly and melancholy dream-world. 'Rubies', in startling contrast, brings a blast of mid-20th-century pizzazz, set to jazzinflected Stravinsky.

Exploring Ballets Russes

Dates: 16.6.2009 to 20.6.2009. As one of the only two ballet companies which have direct lineage from the Ballets Russes, English National Ballet celebrates the centenary with performances of some of the troupe's great works. Ballets Russes productions were collaborations with major choreographers, composers, artists and dancers of the time including Pavlova, Picasso, Debussy, Chanel, Matisse and Nijinsky. Chopin's music sets the tone for the calm beauty of this ethereal and graceful ballet. It tells the tale of the Shah's harem seducing his slaves amid wild revelry and the inevitable massacre of the wives and slaves when the Shah unexpectedly returns. Other works created for the Ballets Russes will also be performed during the season. Exploring Ballets Russes: The Dying Swan, Schhrazade.

Dates: 21.4.2009 to 26.6.2009. A strange mix of stuffed animal hides and photographs create an unsettling atmosphere in thinking around metaphors in nature by Corinne Rusch. In this new installation at the Austrian Cultural Forum London, Rusch ironically explores the obvious but often understated parallels between the human will to preserve our beauty and youth, and the ubiquitous taxidermy process, artificially preserving wild and domestic animals for our human sense of ownership. The dense medium-format photographs, which hang disturbingly between a series of stuffed animal asses, show us scenes from what appears to be the back room of a taxidermists studio.

Daisy Pulls it Off

Dates: 4.8.2009 to 8.8.2009. Daisy Pulls It Off, first performed in 1983, is an affectionate pastiche of the classic girls' school story, crammed full of slang like 'topping', 'jolly' and 'scrummy'. The play captures the innocence and uncomplicated essence of Angela Brazil's schoolgirl novels from the 1920s which dealt with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls: their charms, misfortunes and personal failures. Set in a prestigious all girls boarding school in a bygone era, the play follows our plucky heroine, Daisy Meredith, an elementary school girl and first scholarship student to attend Grangewood School. The privileged students are determined to make Daisy look bad in the eyes of the administration, which has its own problems. Can Daisy shake off the stigma of her poor school background and overcome the snobbish prejudice from her well-to-do schoolgirl rivals? Can she save the school from financial ruin before it's too late? Who is that mysterious whistling gardener? And more importantly will there be enough jam for tea.

Letters Homes

Dates: 21.7.2009 to 25.7.2009. Sylvia Plath was already recognised as a brilliant poet at the time of her death, and despite an ongoing interest in her life and work, few biographers consulted the one person who knew her best. In 1975 her mother Aurelia therefore published a volume of the letters Sylvia wrote between her college years and her death in 1963. Sylvia Plath exemplified a heroine for feminists, a wronged woman oppressed by patriarchy, a pathology where her work was fuelled not by her intellect but her sickness, and lastly a character synonymous with depression and self-destruction. This play allows us to discover the less well known aspects of a woman with the use of her own words, not in the guise of a poet, but that of a dutiful and loving daughter. Aurelia was born in 1906 and was 57 years old when her daughter died. Their relationship was problematic and ambiguous as they were both very close despite Sylvia's claims that she hated her and her demonisation in much of Plath's poetry. The letters and this play, however, show her to be a woman who sacrificed much for her children. Letters Home is two plays running in parallel, one taking place in the mind of Aurelia which recounts Sylvia's life and the efforts made to save it, while the other is set in the here and now as Aurelia, through telling her story, endeavours to reach an understanding that she is alive and her daughter is gone.

Ballet Russes: Programme One

Dates: 16.6.2009 to 20.6.2009. As one of the only two ballet companies which have direct lineage from the Ballets Russes, English National Ballet celebrates the centenary with performances of some of the troupe's great works. Ballets Russes productions were collaborations with major choreographers, composers, artists and dancers of the time including Pavlova, Picasso, Debussy, Chanel, Matisse and Nijinsky. Les Sylphides is poetry in movement; picture-perfect ballerinas flutter across the stage wearing long white winged tutus in Fokine's homage to the great Romantic ballets. Chopin's music sets the tone for the calm beauty of this ethereal and graceful ballet. Schhrazade features Rimsky-Korsakov's dramatic music and exotic scenery and costumes by the incomparable Lon Bakst. It tells the tale of the Shah's harem seducing his slaves amid wild revelry and the inevitable massacre of the wives and slaves when the Shah unexpectedly returns. Other works created for the Ballets Russes will also be performed during the season. Programme 1: Apollo, Le Spectre de la Rose, The Dying Swan, L'aprs-midi d'un Faune, Schhrazade.
