The Royal Ballet: Chroma + Tryst + Symphony in C

Dates: 22.5.2010 to 11.6.2010. Chroma pushes the dancers to their physical limits through McGregor's astonishing and demanding choreography and is set to spine-tingling music from Joby Talbot and the White Stripes. Sym phony in C is a vivid example of Balanchine's ability to portray the very essence of his chosen music, as the varying melodies, rhythms and textures of Bizet's youthful score are reflected magically in dance. Conductor: Chroma: Daniel Capps; Tryst: James MacMillan; Symphony in C: Dominic Grier. Choreography: Chroma: Wayne McGregor; Tryst: Christopher Wheeldon; Symphony in C: George Balanchine.

Dan Dare and the Birth of Hi-Tech Britain

Dates: 22.5.2008 to 25.10.2009. Dan Dare's rocket fleet roars high over Venus to trounce his arch foe - the power-mad Mekon. Meanwhile, back on Earth, another extraordinary future is unfolding - one which laid the foundation for Britain's hi-tech consumer society. After 1945, though war-weary and broke, Britain found huge pride in wartime advances such as radar, penicillin and the jet engine. Discoveries like these were now tipped to kick-start world-beating industries, bring prosperity and bankroll the emerging welfare state. In an age before globalisation, products from rockets to radios sprang from local roots. Together they reveal a fascinating 'lost world' of British design and invention - a glimpse of a time when the TV in the corner was a Murphy, not a Sony.

Arcadia

Dates: 27.5.2009 to 12.9.2009. Arcadia, Tom Stoppard's 'richest, most ravishing comedy' (NY Times), is a dazzling, witty masterpiece of misunderstanding and quest for knowledge, resonating across centuries. David Leveaux, one of the country's leading directors, whose other recent West End and Broadway work with Tom Stoppard includes The Real Thing and Jumpers, will direct the first major revival of this brilliant play since its premiere at the National Theatre in 1993. April 1809, a stately home in Derbyshire. Thomasina, a gifted pupil, proposes a startling theory, beyond her comprehension. All around her, the adults, including her tutor Septimus, are preoccupied with secret desires, illicit passions and professional rivalries. Two hundred years later, academic adversaries Hannah and Bernard, are piecing together puzzling clues, curiously recalling those events of 1809, in their quest for an increasingly elusive truth. Arcadia features an outstanding company of actors, including Neil Pearson, Dan Stevens, Nancy Carroll, Jessie Cave and Ed Stoppard.

Proof

17 November 2009 - 21 November 2009. A Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Auburn, Proof is the compelling story of a woman haunted by her father's past and the shadow of her own future. It explores the fine line between genius and madness, the relationships within a family and the concept of truth. For some years now, Catherine, a woman in her late twenties, has cared for her mentally unstable father, a mathematical genius named Robert. On his death, Catherine must deal not only with the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire, but also with the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father who wants to comb the genius's numerous notebooks for some publishable work. As Catherine confronts Hal's affections and her sister's overbearing plans for her life, she struggles to come to terms with the implications of her father's death. She has inherited at least some of his mathematical ability; will she inherit his madness too.

New Adventures: Matthew Bourne's Dorian Gray

Dates: 6.10.2009 to 10.10.2009. Matthew Bourne's Dorian Gray freely adapted from Oscar Wilde's masterpiece. This gothic fable becomes a darkly seductive dance theatre event from master storyteller, Matthew Bourne. Set in the image obsessed world of contemporary art and politics, this 'black fairy tale' tells the story of an exceptionally alluring young man who makes a pact with the devil. Amongst London's beautiful people, Dorian Gray is the 'it boy', an icon of beauty and truth in an increasingly ugly world. The destructive power of beauty, the blind pursuit of pleasure and the darkness and corruption that lie beneath a charming facade; the themes behind Oscar Wilde's cautionary tale have never been more timely.

Dates: 19.3.2009 to 2.8.2009. Bobby Baker is one of the most widely acclaimed and popular performance artists working today. She began her diary drawings in 1997 when she became a patient at a day centre. Originally private, they gradually became a way for her to communicate complex thoughts and emotions that are difficult to articulate to her family, friends and professionals. The drawings cover Bobby's experiences of day hospitals, acute psychiatric wards, 'crisis' teams and a variety of treatments. They chart the ups and downs of her recovery, family life, work as an artist, breast cancer and just how funny all this harrowing stuff can be.

The Development of the Art Collection 1830-2007

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. You would expect a hospital 760 years old to have paintings of kings and queens, governors and benefactors. Indeed we do: our oldest is a portrait of King Henry VIII from the school of Holbein. But one hundred and fifty years ago we started to collect art by our patients. The core of the collection was started by two psychiatrists, Dr Eric Guttmann and Dr the Hon Walter Maclay who worked at the Maudsley Hospital in the 1930s. They were clearly influenced by the art of the insane. Guttmann was primarily interested in clinical research. Maclay, a wealthy man, collected for his private enjoyment, and his interest was an extension of his more general cultural pursuits.
