The Royal Ballet: The Sleeping Beauty

Dates: 23.10.2009 to 23.1.2010. In this classic ballet, Princess Aurora is cursed at her christening by the evil fairy Carabosse and is fated to die after pricking her finger on a spindle at her 16th birthday celebration. Through the intervention of the Lilac Fairy, the curse of death iscommuted to a long sleep, one from which Princess Aurora is awakened by the heroic Prince Florimund. The wedding celebrations in Act III include many divertissements for well known fairytale characters. Conductor: Valery Ovsyanikov.

The Churchill's magical pantomime is a high-energy show packed with sing-along songs, wonderful dance, colourful costumes and characters, sparkling sets, and of course, non-stop jokes and join-in fun! Exploring Interiors: Decoration of the Home 1900-1960

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. Exploring Interiors asks what our living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens were like in the first half of the twentieth century, and why. The displays show fabrics and wallpapers, from expensive designs in the most up-to-date styles to cheaper, popular patterns for the mass market. They offer a taste of the sort of choices that were available at the time. Catalogues give a glimpse of the fixtures and fittings, the furniture and furnishings that could be bought in the shops. Advertisements and magazines highlight the newest household equipment and reveal changing attitudes to the home and domestic life. But, at the same time, Exploring Interiors uses the evocative evidence of photographs and personal commentary to find out what people's homes were really like. And, more often than not, they were very different from the impression given by advertisements, catalogues and magazines.

Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum - Collection

Dates: 1.1.2008 to 31.12.2009. Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in a small laboratory at St Mary's Hospital in 1928. This discovery revolutionised medicine and there are very few people whose lives have not benefited from it. The laboratory has been restored to its former, cramped condition.

AD50 - Present Day

The Museum explores the story of London's River, Port and People, from Roman settlement of the port, through to the recent regeneration of London's former Docklands - a 2000-year storyline. The permanent displays pay homage to the people who helped to build and shape the City of London- and those who continue to do so. Dutch

Elise

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. Anorexia is possibly the most hurtful of all mental conditions. More often than not found in teenage girls, they can be driven to the verge of self-destruction and their families can suffer from deep and lasting feelings of guilt and helplessness. Elise suffered from it for ten years, and was our patient in the Eating Disorders Unit. Despite this she took an art degree and made anorexia the subject of her degree show, called Welcome to my World in 1993. It was to be another four years before she was finally cured.

Banknotes & Coins

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. The Bank's collection of notes is unique. It mainly consists of issued Bank of England notes dating from the late 17th century, original artwork by note designers, and an unrivalled collection of forgeries. It is the largest collection of Bank of England notes and associated material in the world. As to coin, the collection includes a representative selection of the regal coinage issued by the Royal Mint from 1694, the year of the Bank's foundation, and comprehensively covers the Bank's late 18th and early 19th century issues of Bank of England dollars and tokens.

Archaeology

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. The Horniman Museum's collections include a substantial amount of archaeological material, including items from all over the world. Frederick Horniman began these collections himself, and they were added to over the decades through donations and purchases from a number of sources. British prehistoric material forms a large proportion of collection, the bulk of it flint tools, some from well-known sites such as Swanscombe and Grimes Graves. There are also prehistoric objects from all over Europe and some parts of Africa. Ancient Peruvian pottery and Caribbean stone tools are also represented. The Museum has a large number of Ancient Egyptian artefacts as well as a collection of Ancient Greek and Cypriot pottery. Other material includes flint tools and weapons from North America, glass spearheads from Australia and a small collection of Romano-British objects.

Frank Auerbach: London Building Sites 1952-62

Dates: 15.10.2009 to 17.1.2010. This will be the first exhibition to bring together the seminal group of paintings of London building sites by Frank Auerbach (born 1931). These extraordinary paintings are among the most important contributions to post-war painting in Britain. Fascinated by the post-war rebuilding of London, Auerbach combed the city's numerous building sites with his sketchbook in hand. He visited the major sites, including St Paul's, Oxford Street, Leicester Square and the Shell Building on the South Bank. Drawing on public and private collections nationally and internationally, the exhibition charts the early development of Auerbach's remarkable approach to painting, for which he is celebrated as one of Britain's greatest living artists.

Britains First Art Gallery

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. William Hogarth (1697-1764), one of the original Governors of the Foundling Hospital, encouraged leading artists of the day to donate works to the childrens home, with the aim of attracting wealthy potential benefactors. In doing so, he created Britains first public exhibition space, which became a centre of artistic experimentation and led to the formation of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. Today the collection contains works by Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Wilson, Hayman, Highmore, Roubiliac and Rysbrack, displayed in fully restored interiors as they would have been seen by visitors to the original Hospital in the 1700s.

The Book of Tributes

The Cartoon Museum - The Collection

A permanent collection of some of the best examples should be got together and housed under one roof, forming a sort of National Gallery of Humorous Art. Docklands at War 1939 - 1945

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. Through sensitive and informative displays featuring film, artefacts, interactive touch screens, models and life-size reconstructions the visitor is given a full understanding of how the Second World War affected the Docklands area and communities, One of the Museums most treasured possessions is a flag that flew from the bow of one of the first landing crafts to reach France during the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944. It was found among the effects of George Sluman, who was coxswain of the craft, and donated to the Museum by his widow Joyce. George worked as a waterman before the war in the Port of London. Men with his expertise on the water were enlisted to support the massive allied assault upon fortress Europe on D-Day. Other exhibits explore the Port's role in the Dunkirk rescue and secret projects such as construction of the Maunsell Forts; Pipe Line Under The Ocean and the huge breakwaters for the Mulberry Harbours.

The Port and River collection comes from three main sources, the Port of London authority museum, and material collected by Museum of Londons during 1970s and 1980s and material collected more recently by museum in Docklands. The collections have a unique significance to Londons history, given that the port has provided the key to so much of Londons economic and social importance over 2,000 years. Its have models of river craft, sailing ships and steamers from 18th. Shown photographs of huge quantities of cargo were transferred direct from ships to lighters, or barges.

British Portraiture 2

The Royal Ballet: Chroma + Tryst + Symphony in C

Dates: 22.5.2010 to 11.6.2010. Chroma pushes the dancers to their physical limits through McGregor's astonishing and demanding choreography and is set to spine-tingling music from Joby Talbot and the White Stripes. Tryst is an orchestral tour de force comprising five sharply defined modes, from the brassy, action-packed challenge of the outer sections, through quieter Celtic wistfulness and an iridescent central section for strings. Sym phony in C is a vivid example of Balanchine's ability to portray the very essence of his chosen music, as the varying melodies, rhythms and textures of Bizet's youthful score are reflected magically in dance. Business History Objects

All of the collections reflect the development of the postal service but this section tells you about those which also illustrate the history of the Post Office and Royal Mail as a business. Our collection illustrates the changing face of Royal Mail from its conception in 1635 until the present day. In 1635 King Charles I as King of England opened up his private mail carrying service for use by the public. It became known as The Royal Mail. That service developed over the 370 years since then into the company we know today. In that time, despite many changes, Royal Mail has always maintained a public presence that is instantly recognisable, most particularly with the GPO, The Post Office and Royal Mail.

The Development of the Art Collection 1830-2007

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. You would expect a hospital 760 years old to have paintings of kings and queens, governors and benefactors. Indeed we do: our oldest is a portrait of King Henry VIII from the school of Holbein. But one hundred and fifty years ago we started to collect art by our patients. The core of the collection was started by two psychiatrists, Dr Eric Guttmann and Dr the Hon Walter Maclay who worked at the Maudsley Hospital in the 1930s. They were clearly influenced by the art of the insane. Guttmann was primarily interested in clinical research. Maclay, a wealthy man, collected for his private enjoyment, and his interest was an extension of his more general cultural pursuits.

The Royal Ballet: The Nutcracker

Dates: 26.11.2009 to 1.1.2010. With a wealth of famous melodies, seasonal favourite The Nutcracker is classical ballet at its most approachable and visually entrancing. Adapted from Hoffmann's story of Christmas Eve, it features a magician, an enchanted gift, a battle with the Mouse King, a guiding angel and a journey through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets! It all begins when young Clara creeps downstairs for one of her presents, but finds instead a night of magical adventures. The designs for this classic production recreate a 19th-century Christmas - but one where the Christmas tree magically grows and toy soldiers come to life to fight the Mouse King! The beautifully coloured imaginings of the fantasy Sugar Garden and its celebratory dances make a fabulous contrast - the Sugar Plum Fairy is just one of the delights here - as Peter Wright's production carries the story from its mysterious start to its happy conclusion.

British Portraiture

The anonymous Judd Marriage, which was bequeathed to the gallery in the 16th-century, is displayed alongside well known 18th-century portraits such as Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse by Reynolds and Lucy Ebberton by Knapton as well as Dennings adorable portrait of the Queen Victoria, aged Four.

Canalettos 'Old Walton Bridge' and 'The Bucintoro at the Molo on Ascension Day' and Tiepolo's sketches for the ceilings of villas represent the Venetian School. Hogarth's conversation piece 'A Fishing Party' and Gainsborough's portrait of 'An Unknown Couple in a Landscape' represent the English fashion for being portrayed against the backdrop of land or estate, while the French Watteau's 'Le Plaisir du Bal' likewise portrays the upper classes conversing and at play.

Australian Pictures - Auction

15 December 2009. Christie's has sold Australian art since the 1960s both in Australia and London. The continuing strength of the market has produced exceptional prices including most recently for Frederick McCubbins Sawing Timber in December 2007, London. Christie's typically hosts two annual sales in London to showcase the best of Australian art. Privately negotiated sales have included Eugene von Guerard's magisterial colonial landscape View of Geelong, sold on behalf of the Lord Lloyd-Webber to the Geelong Gallery, Victoria, for 1.6m, setting an auction record for any Australian painting and the second highest price for a privately negotiated sale of a painting to an Australian institution . Previously, Christie's negotiated the sale of John Webber's Portrait of Captain Cook to the Australian National Portrait Gallery for A$5.3m.

Freeze Frame

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. To coincide with International Polar Year, the National Maritime Museum displays some of the earliest photographs of the Arctic, its landscape and people, in a new temporary exhibition in the Queen's House. Freeze Frame will showcase a selection of prints taken from the Museum's world-class historic photographs collection. The exhibition will look at two expeditions to the Arctic under Captain Edward Inglefield in 1854, and Captain George Nares in 1875-76. Both expeditions used photographic processes that were in their infancy, having been announced to the public only a few years before. Both processes involved a significant amount of bulky equipment and chemicals in order to develop the negatives. However, the technique used by Nares had a shorter exposure time allowing more photographs of the expedition activities to be recorded.

The Entomology Collection

Dates: 1.1.2008 to 31.12.2009. The Grant Museum holds approximately 14000 insect specimens, which are preserved in a variety of different ways. Some are pinned, some have been preserved as fossils and some are stored in spirits, such as alcohol. In 1850 January Two cases of insects, one with 28 glazed drawers containing approximately 2000 specimens, and 12 specimens in spirit are recorded as belonging to the college. The moths of this collection all have described ranges in South America but the only locality information on approximately a third of the labels is 'Santa Clara'.

The origins of The Scottish National Portrait Gallery can be traced back to the late eighteenth century and to the enthusiasm of one man, the mildly eccentric David, 11th Earl of Buchan. It opened its doors to the public in 1889 and features portraits in the fields of science and medicine, philosophy and literature.

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. The Horniman Museum's aquarium is one of London's oldest surviving aquaria. Frederick Horniman is said to have been inspired to construct an aquarium in the Museum after viewing the Horniman Aquarium at the Great Exhibition site. The Aquarium was founded in 1903 under the supervision of eminent zoologist and ethnographer Alfred Cort Haddon (1855-1940). Haddon was a correspondent of Phillip Henry Gosse (1810-1888), the Victorian naturalist consulted by Charles Darwin. Gosse set up the first marine aquaria in Britain and also wrote the first descriptive catalogue of British marine invertebrates.

Dates: 7.5.2009 to 1.12.2009. A 37 metre long artwork depicting a coloured alternate reality created by Peter McDonald. It is displayed along 'The Cut' and down Blackfriars Road and plays with the idea of transforming a public space into a place for art. McDonald, who won the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize in 2008, has been artist-in-residence at the station since early this year.

Dates: 4.11.2009 to 18.11.2009. Agon: Agon is plotless, an abstract ballet for eight female and four male dancers. Sphinx: The ballet is a powerful variation on the Oedipus legend. Inspired by Act II of Cocteau's play, The Infernal Machine, Tetley's Sphinx appears in the guise of a young woman who, weary of immortality, longs to fall in love with a man. The Evolving Pharmacy and Lambeth's Pharmacy Past, to Pharmacy and Nature, and Making Medicines

An exhibition featuring objects that range from 18th-century seahorses to current painkillers, and from equipment used to make pills in the 1800s to jars used to hold 16th-century medicinal ingredients. There is also an opportunity to see the architect's model for the 11-storey building that was first planned to house the society when it moved to Lambeth in the 1970s.

Capturing the Moment

Dates: 18.3.2009 to 10.1.2010. An exhibition of work by Reg Wilson, one of Britain's most prolific performance photographers. From the 1960s he has recorded four decades of the performing arts in all their richness and variety, capturing the great and the good on stage, backstage and in the studio. This selection from Wilson's archive, chosen by the artist, shows every aspect of the performance process from the studio to the finished product. It also demonstrates a range of techniques, from the staged photo-call to the snatched backstage shot and includes some of the earliest stage photography and colour productions.

Charles Sims (1873 -1928)

Dates: 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009. Charles Sims reputation as a painter was established with his first one-man show at the Leicester Galleries in 1906. He became best known for lyrical open-air scenes. In 1918 he was sent to France as an official artist. He became gradually more reserved and aloof, and appeared to be a very lonely and pathetic figure. He was Keeper of the Academy Schools from 1920 to 1926, and earned much of his living by portrait painting during this period. In the last two years of his life he worked on a series which he called Spirituals or Spiritual Ideas. He killed himself shortly before six of these paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of 1928.

For centuries, the activities of dentists and the symptoms of tooth disease have been used as themes in works of art, drawings, cartoons, paintings, sculpture and woodcarvings. These images are a valuable source of information about providers of dental care and different treatments for toothache. The museum has an extensive collection of fine art depicting dentistry. Dentistry has long been a subject for humour in cartoon-art. The golden age of political and social caricature and satire was between 1780 and 1830 when three artists were active There follows a set of three English engravings, which date from the beginning of the 19th century, showing three options available when a tooth extraction was required. Finally we see a barber-surgeon at work in the 17th century in the Netherlands.

The Conversation Piece: Scenes of Fashionable Life

Dates: 30.10.2009 to 14.2.2010. This exhibition will explore the tradition of the 'Conversation Piece', group portraits of high-society sitters in strikingly informal situations. With its roots in 17th-century Dutch painting, the genre is best known through the work of the English artists, William Hogarth and George Stubbs in the 18th century and Sir Edwin Landseer in the 19th century. The greatest exponent of the Conversation Piece was Johan Zoffany; the exhibition will include a remarkable series of works produced by the artist for his royal patron George III. The Conversation Piece depicts sitters going about their daily lives and thus provides a fascinating insight into the fashions, interiors and manners of the age.
