The Royal Ballet: Les Sylphides + New Marriott + The Firebird

Dates: 4.5.2009 to 30.5.2009. A rich programme of three contrasting works brings together the skill and drama of The Royal Ballet with 100 years of ballet heritage itself. The Company celebrates the centenary of the birth of Diaghilev's Ballet Russes with two signature works by its great choreographer Mikhail Fokine. Les Sylphides perfectly matches the grace and fl owing elegance of Romantic ballets to the music of Chopin, richly orchestrated. There is no story here for the four soloists and the female corps de ballet, just the beauty of the movement in the introspective atmosphere of a wooded glade. In contrast, The Firebird pits good against evil in the dramatic tale of the magical fi rebird a dazzling central role for a star ballerina handsome Prince Ivan, the beautiful Tsarevna and the terrifying magician Kostchei. With the musical brilliance of Stravinsky 's score and Natalia Gontcharova 's rich stage design, The Firebird brings a triumphant fi nale to this programme. Complementing these two works is the world premiere of Alastair Marriott 's third new work for The Royal Ballet on the main stage. As his previous works Tanglewood and Children of Adam have shown, Marriott brings a vision to dance that explores classical heritage but with unique contemporary innovation. Rich variety in choreography and performance make this a distinctive programme of celebration and innovation.
