Benjamin West: Death on the Pale Horse and Other Works

Dates: 27.2.2009 to 24.5.2009. Benjamin West's first version of Death on the Pale Horse is the focus of this display. Drawn in 1783, his striking portrayal of the Apocalypse was part of a commission from George III but the King eventually rejected it as a 'Bedlamite scene'. West nevertheless pursued the composition independently, reworking his original study to produce a final, monumental painting in 1817. West was born in Pennsylvania, USA, in 1738, but achieved his greatest success in Britain. Moving to London in 1763, he rapidly established himself as one of the country's leading artists. His status was confirmed when he became a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768 and he was shortly afterwards appointed History Painter to the King. In 1792 he succeeded Sir Joshua Reynolds as the Academy's second President. Death on the Pale Horse features alongside a small group of watercolours, drawings and sketchbooks from the Royal Academy Collection to explore West's skills as a draughtsman and the fascination with apocalyptic imagery that emerged during a turbulent era of wars and revolutions.

Daniel Enkaoua: Recent Paintings

Dates: 3.4.2009 to 30.4.2009. In his succinct introduction to the exhibition catalogue, Timothy J. Standring, the Gates Foundation Curator of Painting & Sculpture at Denver Art Museum, writes: 'In these new works, Daniel Enkaoua affirms the strong presence of his own poetic intentions, the emergence of which may be mysterious to the artist himself. His paintings are what they are: wonderfully complex productions of his imagination that continues to give the more we view them. They reveal the tonality, lighting, and palette that-he has discovered-succeed and that fulfill that poetic dimension. Not all practitioners of the visual arts reach this level. While some achieve it, they also fail to sustain it. Here, however, is an artist who is close to Parnassus and will stay there because he willingly challenged himself to take risks by keeping all of the various stylistic and iconographic antecedents under control. To be sure, these works demand more of the viewer, but the rewards are immeasurably greater for the efforts taken.' Daniel Enkaoua paints those closest to himself, his wife and children, friends, the cooking pots and vessels in the house. References are made to past masters: Morandi, Caravaggio, Chardin, Morandi and Rembrandt but these paintings combine a sensitivity and a vivid feeling of abstraction not previously seen in his work. The paint work is beautifully applied on to the canvas often with the additional help of a palette knife and the artist's fingers and palm to enhance the luminescence of the finished work. These paintings will reward any viewer who has time to look at them.

Ayo

Ayo also has American pedigree having recorded and performed in New York alongside Cody Chesnutt amongst others. Catch this intimate performance now before our heroine peaks at substantially larger venues.

The Royal Ballet: Giselle

Dates: 6.4.2009 to 26.5.2009. Giselle is one of the most influential of all Romantic ballets, and one of the greatest and most popular works of the dance canon and of The Royal Ballet 's repertory. The title role presents the transcendental power of a woman's love in the face of betrayal and is one of the most technically demanding and emotionally challenging roles in classical dance not surprisingly, it is here a great showcase for the leading ballerinas of the Company. Peter Wright 's sensitive staging in the atmospheric designs by John Macfarlane heightens the contrast as the story moves between the human and supernatural worlds. The peasant girl Giselle is driven to kill herself when she discovers that her youthful lover 'Loys' is in reality Count Albrecht, and not free to marry her. She rises from the dead to prey on the man who has betrayed her. But as Albrecht, repenting, visits her moonlit grave, Giselle protects him from the deathly touch of her phantom sisters until the dawn sees him safe once more. The passion and drama of the tale combined with the beauty of its choreography have made Giselle as instantly appealing for newcomers to ballet as it is to those already under its spell.

Baroque Reason

Dates: 27.2.2009 to 4.4.2009. Keith Talent is pleased to present Baroque Reason, an exhibition about complexity, pattern and ornament in abstract art. Baroque Reason brings together a group of artists whose individual approaches combine through an aesthetic and expressive drive which is very sympathetic to the elaborate and intricate qualities of Baroque art and architecture. In this instance a contemporary baroque is presented as an open proposal, an attitude rather than a style. This is a neo-baroque reflecting the dynamics of hybridity and difference. These artists celebrate the dazzling, the disorientating, and revel in baroque's fascination with opacity, unreadability and the indecipherability of the reality they depict. This collection of paintings present a conception of reality in which the instability of forms in movement creates a duality; an enchanted illusion and a disenchanted world. The title of the exhibition is taken from the French philosopher Christine Buci-Glucksmann's book on the aesthetics of modernity. Buci-Glucksmann claims 'If one had to single out a scopic regime that has finally come into its own in our time, it would be the madness of vision identified with the baroque'.

Untitled + Ichi + Is it Me

Dates: 17.4.2009 to 18.4.2009. A triple bill of work by promising young artists begins with Untitled, choreographed and performed by French hip hop artist Mickael 'Marso' Riviere with dancer Navala Chaudri. The duet, which fuses lithe and lyrical choreography with elements of capoeira and hip hop, is set to live tabla and bansuri (flute) music by Jason Kalidas and received audience acclaim when presented in its early stages at British Dance Edition 2008 and The Place's 2007 Touch Wood season. Saiko Kino's Ichi, commissioned for the 2008 Place Prize, is a haunting duet inspired by a traditional Japanese ghost story. Contrasting effects of light and darkness, along with atmospheric live music for violin, cello and percussion, drive a narrative which ends in torment for a lonely prisoner. In Is It Me by Wayne Sables, three men on individual journeys gradually become aware of one another, finding solace and comfort in each other's presence in the aftermath of relationship breakdown.

Garden and Cosmos: The Royal Paintings

Dates: 28.5.2009 to 23.8.2009. The exhibition will feature a loan of 55 paintings from India, none of which have ever been seen before in Europe. The region of Jodhpur developed distinctive styles of painting between the 17th and 19th centuries, producing one of the most inventive styles in northern India in this period. Paintings produced for the private enjoyment of the Jodhpur brought together traditional Rajasthani styles and combined them with styles developed in the court of the imperial Mughals. Subjects depicted include the Jodhpur rulers in their gardens, surrounded by their wives while a group of later works reflect the devotion of the then Maharaja to an esoteric yogic tradition. Jodhpur artists rose to the challenge of creating images for metaphysical concepts and yoga narratives which had never before been the focus of court art.

Errors + BLK JKS

Dates: 16.4.2009. Formed in Glasgow in 2004 post-electro band Errors quickly set about making a name for themselves in their hometown on the back of a 3 track demo recorded in band member Simon's bedroom. Merging spiky new-wave guitars with deep bass-y Acid sounds and a knack for melody and pop hooks beyond their years, the four-piece hit the dancefloor running. Now under the wing of Mogwai who signed them to their Rock Action label Errors manage to retain the elements of new-wave and acid-house that marked their early releases and build on it; a merge of angular guitars, spiraling, euphoric synths and informed dance sounds underpinned by truly mesmerising beats and rhythms in expansive, ambitious style. Supporting them are South African new wave sensations BLK JKS who came to prominence in the US last year after a chance meeting with ber-producer Diplo who invited them over from Johannesburg. Subsequently landing on the cover of Fader and impressing at South by Southwest their debut Mystery EP was recorded in New York by Brandon Curtis of Secret Machines and is about to be released by Secretly Canadian.

A Camp

Dates: 6.5.2009. A Camp first drew breath in a forest in Northern Sweden, neck deep in snow, in the waning of the last millenium, amongst families of foxes. It began a collabrative effort between two Swedish humans : pop star and former figure skater Nina Persson, whose band The Cardigans had seen crazy success in the roaring 90s, and Niclas Frisk, a outdoorsman and explorer who had himself enjoyed pop stardom with his band Atomic Swing. In common was a love for classic American music, and a melancholy both universal and somehow highly specific to the Scandinavian psyche.

Chu Teh-Chun

Dates: 4.3.2009 to 28.3.2009. Jean-Paul Desroches, Conservateur Gnral du Patrimoine, Muse des arts asiatiques-Guimet, Paris, says of Chu's work: 'It is in art, perilous because without regret, that Chu The-Chun delivers the most direct expression of his being. A studio man and not a plein-air painter, he divides his time between the easel and the desk of the scholar. He reserves colour for the daytime and for dusk he chooses ink. In the sunlight he becomes the bard of cosmic splendours, while the setting sun, emotion and meditation carry him away.' In his works on paper Chu employs the traditional Chinese technique of wash painting, combining the customary black with coloured inks in pale greens and dusty reds for many of the works. Further drawing on traditional motifs the ink paintings are in both the 'quafu' or vertical and the 'shoujan' or horizontal format. In his oil paintings Chu depicts the same flowing abstract forms through a different medium, seeing a return to the Western practices of his early career.

When their double crossing director brings in a 'known' actress as the cover for one of the stars the two rivals unite in their resentment. This wonderful, acutely observed play with its mixture of pathos and hilarity, offers us an insight into the lives of the would-be stars who are never seen.

Dido, Queen of Carthage

Dates: 17.3.2009 to 7.5.2009. Seeking refuge from a violent storm, Aeneas lands on the shores of Carthage where Queen Dido, moved by his retelling of the fall of Troy and bewitched by a malevolent Cupid, soon burns with love. Their ensuing passion, manipulated by the watching, warring gods, can only end in tragedy. It is Aeneas' frown that ends my days. If he forsake me not, I never die; For in his looks I see eternity, And he'll make me immortal with a kiss. Written when he was an undergraduate, the wit, the daring and the sheer poetry of Christopher Marlowe's first play were so new and exciting in English theatre that Hamlet was still talking about it seventeen years later.
